The essay writing seminar to build your best future

The college essay is your opportunity to share your voice with admissions officials. It's the first time they'll hear your unique voice. It's the way you can customize your application with personality, depth, and perspective.

One Earth Writing's three-session workshops take teens through an exploratory writing process to understand their identities, how they want to make a difference in the world, and how to choose colleges that will help them achieve their goals.

Did you know college applications officers can tell a lot about you before they read your essay?

Your grades, test scores, even the classes you take tell a story about you. So do your extracurricular activities, sports, and organizational affiliations. So do your extracurricular activities, sports, and organizational affiliations. While research shows that admissions officers do, indeed, read every essay, the essay itself is not likely to change your destiny at that institution.  However, this essay is your one chance to stand out from the crowd, to have your voice heard. It's also a great opportunity to explore your dreams, desires, ambitions, and life goals.

College officials say the essay can be one of the most important parts of your application because it shows the person behind the test scores and grades. If you do it right, your essay should be a window into your personality and the way you think.

An application for higher learning builds a complete profile of you as an individual and potential student for that institution. The essay is where you get to open your mouth and speak. If admissions officers think they know you based on all the other information, your essay can set them straight or confirm their hunches.

As you consider where you want to go after high school, take a cursory glance at the story you've been building until now. Is it consistent? Does one passion peek through your busy schedule? If so, what are you doing to cultivate that passion and  let it direct everything you undertake?

Deliberately steer your course by taking charge of your story as early in high school as you can. Develop interests in a variety of directions to show a far-reaching, deep-thinking person who want to impact the world in a unique and indelible way.
